Why are alternative solutions needed in health care?

The need for alternative solutions is becoming more apparent as time passes and the realization that there is no magic bullet, potion or lotion that can cure our illnesses. There are basic laws of nature that cannot be denied or overcome no matter how sophisticated we may become. The current American health care model is the "pain model". This basically states that if there is no pain, there is no problem. This model is clearly flawed. Examples of this flaw can be noted by the fact that in 40% of patients with heart disease, the first indication that they have a problem is, they die. How many times have you heard of the cancer patient who just recently started having pain and then it is discovered that Cancer has spread throughout their body and there is no hope for survival.

There is no drug made that can "cure" a health problem. Only the body can heal and repair itself, and this must take place from the inside out, not from the outside in. Antibiotics can reduce an infection long enough for the body to regroup and heal itself, but the drug itself does not cure the body. The same goes for other types of drugs including insulin, hormones, pain killers and blood pressure medication. While all these medications are valuable and helpful, the moment they are withdrawn from use the problem returns and no cure has occurred. Furthermore, all medications have side effects and can be toxic to the body. If a person has more than one complaint, they will often be given multiple medications to address each problem. The cross-reaction of these medications and the side effects can slowly bring about other problems and weaken the bodies healing ability even more.

Alternative health care providers look at the whole body and its basic functions to bring about a change in a person’s health no matter what the symptoms may be. Pain and symptoms are the body’s warning signals that something is wrong indicating a change needs to occur to correct the problem. A partial list of the body's basic functions includes digestion, absorption, hormone balance, structural integrity, emotional stresses, toxic load, detoxification capability, genetic strengths and weaknesses. Alternative practitioners have developed the "functional model" approach to health care. This states that the health status of systems, in the body, are based on functional capacity, not on pain or symptoms.

Functional lab tests can tell if a person's body can detoxify certain chemicals adequately or poorly. Other tests utilizing the white blood cells can determine if a person is allergic to foods, chemicals, petroleum byproducts, heavy metals and other things in the environment may inhibit the immune system response. Chiropractors determine if there is a structural misalignment causing reduced transmission of signals from the brain to the associated body parts. Lab tests are available that can determine the overall nutritional status of the body. The list of functional tests is long but is not widely known by the typical allopathic physician. The current health care system is under great scrutiny by the public that is turning away from drugs that cover up pain but gives no real solution to the actual cause of the health problem.
